How Schoology Learning Can Help Texas Teachers – Top 10 Things To Know

To hit the ground running when it comes to delivering instruction wherever students are

In July of 2020, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) announced that it is partnering with PowerSchool as part of its Texas Home Learning 3.0 Program to provide Schoology Learning, the leading K-12 learning management system, to all LEAs across the entire state to keep the learning going—whether at home, in the classroom, or both.

In light of that recent news, here are the top 10 things that Texas teachers should know as they begin to use Schoology Learning to delivered personalized instruction to students throughout Texas.

1. What exactly is the TEA providing?

As part of the TEA’s Texas Home Learning 3.0 goal of “Bringing Quality At-Home Learning to Texas Students,” TEA is providing Schoology Learning, along with several digital curriculum and content solutions, to any Texas LEA that wishes to join the program for 2 years at no cost to the district.

2. Is Schoology Learning new to Texas?

Not at all. Before the TEA’s announcement, Texas schools representing a student enrollment of over 1.2 million had already chosen Schoology Learning as their solution for delivering personalized instruction. PowerSchool is excited to provide the same great experience to the entire state of Texas.

3. Will Schoology Learning let me track mastery of TEKS?

Absolutely. TEKS learning objectives can be aligned to assignments, activities, and learning objects. Student performance can be recorded by specific learning objectives, which provides valuable insight into which skills a student has mastered and which skills the student needs additional help with.

4. How does Schoology Learning connect me with students and parents?

Schoology Learning provides real-time communication between staff, students, and parents in a number of ways:

  • Built-in messaging
  • Email
  • Text
  • Secure video conferencing

5. How do I personalize instruction in Schoology Learning?

When creating an activity in Schoology Learning (assignment, discussion, etc.), the teacher can decide if one, some, or all students will see the activity. This allows teachers to provide personalized experiences based on a student’s specific needs. For example, some students may receive TEKS-aligned remediation while other students participate in an enrichment activity. And whether you are focused on remediation or enrichment, we encourage you to take a look at our blog post on strategies to increase student engagement.

6. Can I select how I want students to progress through learning experiences?

You can! Student completion rules can be applied to content blocks within Schoology Learning. This allows a teacher to decide which activities a student must complete, whether or not it needs to be completed in a certain order, and even the score that a student must earn in order to advance.

7. Can I share lesson plans with other teachers in my LEA?

Certainly! Lesson plans can be aligned to TEKS, shared within an LEA’s learning object repository, and accessed by teachers so that they are not reinventing the wheel each time a new lesson plan is needed… or when they need substitute lesson plans… or when they go on maternity leave… or anytime!

8. Is Schoology Learning only for scheduled courses that we teach at my school?

Not at all. Schoology Learning supports the creation of Groups—which can consist of any users within an LEA that would benefit from streamlined communication and collaboration. Examples of Groups include:

  • 11th graders who have questions about college applications
  • Parents of K-2 students who want advice on supporting their elementary-aged child’s education at home
  • An online professional learning community (PLC) for staff to share best practices around delivering engaging blended learning experiences
  • Student organizations and clubs

9. What is the parent experience like in Schoology Learning?

The Schoology Learning parent portal provides visibility (read-only) into their child’s lessons and assignments. Parents can also utilize built-in messaging tools to stay connected with their child’s teacher.
